World Architecture Festival (WAF) has announced the first of the Best Use of Stone Prize Shortlist. Selected from across the greater WAF Awards shortlist, the special prize for Best Use of Stone, sponsored by Turkish Stones, recognizes completed building projects that demonstrate innovative and exemplary use of this versatile and hard-wearing material. 

The announcement comes ahead of the live WAF festival which takes place this year in Singapore, at Marina Bay Sands, from 6-8 November, and follows the announcement of the WAF shortlist which celebrates the world’s best new completed buildings, interiors, landscapes and future architecture concepts.

Comprising 9 projects, The Best Use of Stone shortlist includes a futuristic concept for a car park in China, the restoration and conversion of a mid-17th century Ottoman fortress into a museum, and a complex of three houses of worship placed within a fourth secular space for inter-religious dialogue and exchange in Abu Dhabi. 

The shortlisted projects are:

  • Future Car Park by Daniel Statham Studio, in China.
  • Sunita Shekhawat Flagship Store and Gallery by Studio Lotus, in India.
  • Seddülbahir Fortress by KOOP Architects / AOMTD (Arzu Ozsavasci Architecture), in Turkey.
  • Abrahamic Family House by Adjaye Associates, in United Arab Emirates.
  • Twentyfour by 3DM Architecture, in Malta.
  • Jade Apartment by Matrix Design, in China.
  • SCORPIOS BODRUM by GEOMIM, in Turkey.
  • OH HO Residence by Play Architecture, in India.
  • Village House by Studio MK27, in Brazil.

WAF represents the world’s biggest live-judged architectural awards programme. The finalists for the Best Use of Stone prize will go on to compete live at WAF Singapore and the overall winner of it will be announced live during the festival.
