How was Boytorun Architects founded, and what are your fundamental principles in architectural design?
Boytorun Architecture is founded on the educational and professional journey we began at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. Our shared passion for architecture brought Semih and me together at the same university. After completing my architectural education successfully, Semih decided to pursue his master’s degree in London, while I gained professional experience working at an architecture office in New York for four years.
After our international experiences, we returned to Turkey in 2000 and began working together, which eventually led to the establishment of Boytorun Architecture. Since then, we have continued our journey in the sector, producing high-quality projects.
At Boytorun Architecture, we have always adhered to two essential principles: first, accurately understanding the needs and goals of our clients; and second, providing comprehensive design and implementation services for each project to ensure client satisfaction. To achieve these principles, we form a specialized team of professionals for every project. In each project, we address the client’s unique needs functionally and rationally, creating solutions with modern materials and technologies, ultimately aiming to create contemporary designs that meet both desires and requirements.
How has the perception and importance of architecture changed, and what are your views on the role and future of architecture?
Architecture has always reflected the cultural, technological, and economic structure of societies. However, in recent years, with the rapid changes worldwide, the perception and importance of architecture have undergone a significant transformation. Architecture is no longer just a profession that combines aesthetics and functionality; it has evolved into a field that touches our lives through various aspects such as environmental sustainability, technology, flexibility, and human-centered design.
Previously, architecture was largely seen as the art of creating physical spaces. Today, however, due to challenges like climate change and resource depletion, the environmental responsibility of architecture has gained much greater importance. Energy-efficient buildings, recyclable materials, and nature-friendly designs are now at the forefront. With the impact of the pandemic, the necessity for flexible living and working spaces has also increased. People now demand healthier, more functional spaces that adapt to changing needs.
Looking to the future, it is clear that the impact of technology on architecture will become even greater. Innovations such as artificial intelligence, 3D printing, and smart building systems will accelerate the design process and allow us to produce creative solutions. Furthermore, with urbanization on the rise, building sustainable cities, improving transportation systems, and enhancing the quality of life for people will be major responsibilities for architects.
In summary, architecture is no longer limited to just building structures; it has a broader meaning that involves creating spaces that improve people’s quality of life, harmonize with the environment, and are flexible and innovative.
What criteria influence your choice of building materials, and what materials do you prefer?
Material selection is one of the most crucial factors in determining both the aesthetic and functional qualities of a building. We consider numerous factors such as the location of the building, its climate, the needs of the users, and the overall concept of the project. For example, durability is a significant criterion for us. We prefer long-lasting and low-maintenance materials because it is important for a building to withstand the test of time.
In addition, sustainability is now an indispensable element. We strive to select environmentally conscious, recyclable materials that do not excessively deplete natural resources. Materials that ensure energy efficiency, such as those with high thermal insulation and the ability to effectively utilize sunlight, are prioritized.
Aesthetics are, of course, crucial. The texture, color, and overall compatibility of the material with the general design must be considered. For instance, natural stone or wood materials can impart a warm, timeless feel, while glass and metal provide a modern and contemporary effect.
Cost is another key factor. We choose materials that are easy to apply, accessible, and offer long-term economic solutions. Typically, materials such as wood, natural stone, glass, concrete, and composite materials are highlighted. In recent years, recycled and eco-friendly materials have increasingly found their place in our projects.
In short, we establish a unique balance for each project when selecting materials, aiming for the best result by considering aesthetics, functionality, sustainability, and durability.
Which phase of a project do you enjoy the most?
Each phase of the process has its own excitement, but I believe I most enjoy the design phase when ideas start to take shape. The moments when we sketch the first drafts, think about different scenarios, and begin to give identity to the project are truly the most inspiring.
Seeing an idea or concept become concrete and merging with materials, spatial configuration, and details to transform into a real building is a fascinating process. Listening to the client’s needs and expectations and transforming them into functional and aesthetic designs is essentially a problem-solving process, and this is one of the things that excites me the most.
However, honestly, there is also a unique sense of satisfaction when the project is completed and comes to life. Seeing a space you have drawn and thought about for hours being built and used by people is a very special feeling. So, while the design phase is the part I enjoy most, seeing the outcome is just as important.
What types of projects are in your portfolio?
Our portfolio predominantly includes showroom and office projects. In addition, we also work on residential, hotel, restoration, and retail projects.
Is there a special building or design you aspire to create in your professional career?
Yes, there is a project I dream of creating in my career. I would love to design a building that allows people to connect more with nature, stepping away from the fast pace of urban life. I am particularly interested in working on sustainable and nature-friendly designs. Designing buildings that are both aesthetically unique and energy-efficient, without harming the environment, is very meaningful to me. Additionally, creating a calming and peaceful atmosphere inspired by nature within interior spaces is one of my biggest goals. Through such projects, I hope to increase people’s quality of life while also adopting an environmentally conscious approach.
What is the importance of natural stone in your projects?
Natural stone plays a significant role in my projects as it is both aesthetically powerful and highly durable. Each type of stone has its unique texture, color, and pattern, which adds a special and unique touch to the projects. The variety offered by natural stone provides great flexibility in defining the character of each space.
Another important feature is its durability. In outdoor areas, natural stone is highly resistant to weather conditions, temperature fluctuations, and water. This ensures it maintains its form over the years and requires minimal maintenance. Therefore, using long-lasting, healthy, and low-maintenance materials in our projects is very important.
How do you approach the use of natural stone in your automotive sector projects?
In automotive sector projects, we typically use natural stone to create a luxurious and prestigious atmosphere while staying true to the brand’s identity. In these projects, natural stone adds an elegant touch to the space while also strengthening the brand’s image. Especially in VIP areas of showrooms, we utilize the texture and sophistication of stone to create a more exclusive atmosphere. In this way, the space becomes visually striking while also reflecting the high quality of the brand.
In which areas do you use natural stone in your projects?
We typically use natural stone in areas where aesthetics and durability are critical. It is most commonly used for flooring and wall cladding. In flooring, natural stone maintains its elegance even with heavy use and adds a refined touch to the space. In wall applications, it serves as a visually impressive element that enhances the prestige of the space.
In focal areas such as countertops or worktops, the texture of the stone makes the space feel warmer and more sophisticated. In outdoor areas, we prefer stone for facades and landscaping, as it is both environmentally harmonious and durable.
