Merve Kahraman, the Istanbul and New York-based designer known for her storytelling approach to design, presents “Abide” — a sculptural collection of marble side tables that offers a contemporary take on the ancient Evil Eye talisman.

Rooted in centuries of folklore, the Evil Eye is thought to transmit negative energy through an envious or ill-intentioned gaze. To shield against this unseen force, cultures across the Mediterranean have long relied on protective amulets — talismans believed to deflect harm and restore spiritual balance. Kahraman translates this symbolic power into striking furniture pieces that merge the mystical with the material.

Crafted entirely in Istanbul, each Abide table is made from locally sourced, region-specific marble, selected for its quality and character. Every table features a unique stone, carefully chosen to reflect the individuality of the design it supports — no two are ever quite the same. The rich color palette and natural veining of the marble create a visual rhythm that feels grounded and ethereal.

Enhancing this tactile richness, the legs are wrapped in checkered textiles inspired by Alexander Girard’s graphic patterns, lending a bold contrast to the smooth stone surfaces. The combination evokes a balance between tradition and modernism, ornament and function—a dialogue that defines Kahraman’s design language.

Available in custom sizes and colorways, the Abide series is more than a collection of tables; it is an artistic expression of heritage, symbolism, and craftsmanship, designed to protect and adorn our spaces.
