The Double-Faced House

The Double-Faced House is a residential project designed around the dreams and needs of its inhabitants, where the topography and climatic conditions are transformed into powerful design elements.

Located in a picturesque Mediterranean village, the Double-Faced House is designed based on the unique characteristics of its surroundings and climate conditions. The contrast between the two façades, responding to the region’s climatic requirements, stands out as one of the most striking features of the project. The house is built using a wooden frame combined with stone walls reclaimed from the old village house. The façades are designed with varying features depending on the building’s interaction with its surroundings.

The south-facing façade is constructed with thick, reclaimed stone walls that offer a solid, light-blocking barrier against the intense Mediterranean sun and heat. This façade, featuring stones salvaged from the original village house, provides a strong thermal mass that naturally cools the interior during the hot summer months. The wooden structure supports shading devices and strategically placed small openings that promote controlled ventilation, reducing the need for artificial cooling.

In contrast to the south façade, the north-facing façade is designed to be transparent, featuring large windows and glass doors framed by the wooden structure. This façade allows the soft, indirect northern light to flow inside and serves as the building’s view-oriented elevation. The open-plan layout of the house includes the kitchen, wet spaces, living area, and bedroom, complemented by a guest room and a study located on the mezzanine.
