About Project

R2 House is situated in the historic Reşadiye District of Datça, Muğla, an area designated as a Special Environment Protection Zone where stringent regulations govern opening ratios, façade materials, and building heights. In response, the design aimed to create a structure that not only reflects the region’s architectural archetypes but also establishes a harmonious dialogue with the surrounding topography. The objective was to reinterpret the local architectural language through a contemporary lens, crafting a visually compelling composition that resonates within architectural memory. The interplay of volumetric masses of varying scales serves as a deliberate reference to the interlocking forms characteristic of the area’s historic urban fabric.

A fundamental aspect of the design is the seamless relationship between the building and street level. The space between the building and the lower ground is terraced, incorporating an intermediate level designated for parking, which facilitates a gentle, stepped transition. This progression is further enriched by landscaped gardens that blend naturally with the surrounding environment. The stone walls, constructed from the region’s native “keltaş” stone, are thoughtfully designed to allow vegetation to gradually reclaim their surfaces over time, thereby enhancing the interface with the street. This strategy evokes the natural topography of Datça, replacing conventional high retaining walls with an organic, harmonious connection to the landscape.

A core design principle was the incorporation of multiple distinct outdoor spaces, each defined by its unique function. Three terraces were integrated into the composition: the main terrace, offering panoramic views of Gocadağ—Datça’s highest peak and the muse behind a poem by Can Yücel—was conceived as an everyday living space; a green terrace, shaded in the morning and directly connected to the kitchen, provides a tranquil retreat; while the rooftop terrace, designed to accommodate larger gatherings and stargazing, offers an elevated setting for social engagement.
