About Project

Designed by the acclaimed American firm Ennead Architects, the new U.S. Embassy in Ankara harmoniously blends transparency and openness with rigorous security measures, while drawing inspiration from Anatolian architectural heritage. This building not only surpasses the U.S. State Department’s Overseas Buildings Operations Bureau (OBO) benchmarks for sustainability, durability, and functionality but also serves as a robust platform for U.S. diplomacy abroad.

The embassy, conceived by the New York-based Ennead Architects, is deeply informed by Turkey’s rich material history and architectural traditions. The design integrates both architectural and landscape elements into a cohesive whole, embracing the traditional Turkish courtyard concept within a 9-acre sloping site. The site plan features a series of ascending courtyards, organized in a formal yet accessible manner to facilitate the movement of visitors and staff throughout the embassy.

The architects have strategically positioned the main arrival plaza as the initial courtyard in this sequence. Set back from the street, this expansive and meticulously landscaped space effectively blurs the line between the embassy and the city. Located in Söğütözü, Ankara’s burgeoning central business district, the courtyard serves as a verdant sanctuary, with a planting scheme designed to rejuvenate the city’s streetscape. Emphasizing universal design principles, this gently sloping passageway is free from stairs and elevators, providing a straightforward route from the public realm to the embassy’s entrance.

Inspired by the architectural planning of historically significant Turkish buildings, the design guides visitors through a sequence of courtyards and gates, culminating in a gently sloping pathway through the landscape. The design eliminates the need for stairs and elevators, enhancing wayfinding through clear sightlines. Interior courtyards, allowing natural light to penetrate deep into the building, create inviting and versatile spaces suitable for both large-scale formal events and more intimate diplomatic interactions.

Ennead Architects consciously chose regionally sourced materials that reflect Turkey’s enduring masonry traditions. These materials, selected for their low environmental impact, high recycled content, and responsible sourcing, include traditional stone, ultra-high-performance gridded concrete curtain walls, and modern interpretations of Turkish stone architecture. This approach ensures both daylight access and privacy. The building’s design also incorporates marble, travertine, local wood varieties, and ceramics, further grounding the embassy in its regional context.

The landscape and the grand lobby of the embassy showcase the work of the OBO’s Office of Arts in Embassies, featuring a curated selection of artworks by both American and Turkish artists. This initiative offers an opportunity for diplomatic communities and visitors to engage with site-specific art.

Certified LEED® Silver, the U.S. Embassy in Ankara embodies significant energy conservation measures and sustainability features. The building’s energy consumption is notably reduced through the implementation of highly insulated exterior walls, efficient mechanical, electrical, and lighting systems, and solar thermal water systems. Ultra-low-flow fixtures, climate-appropriate landscaping, and harvested rainwater further contribute to the building’s reduced environmental impact, optimized performance, and increased durability.
