ARKAS ART ALAÇATI

In recent years, Alaçatı has undergone a rapid and unplanned transformation driven by luxury-based consumption, particularly spurred by coastal tourism. In response to this shift, “Arkas Art Alaçatı” was conceived as a space that challenges this consumption-driven change, offering an art-oriented, transformative environment to the city and establishing a robust public space.

The building is designed with an introverted spatial organization centered around a sensory experience, focusing on a courtyard. The architecture stands out for its simplicity and clarity, with plain, clean wall surfaces and a solid mass. The design emphasizes spatial depth, which constantly evolves depending on the light and time of day, achieved through carefully controlled openings in the walls, the central courtyard, and skylights on the ceiling. This design fosters a unique relationship between the building and its surroundings, drawing the outside in and guiding visitors from the bustling city atmosphere to a new spatial experience defined by the building’s artistic activities.

The main entrance is accessed through a gap in the solid garden walls from 12500 Street. The front garden, complete with a reflection pool and sculptures, serves as a transition space between the chaotic street and the art-focused activities within the building. On the ground floor, visitors encounter an entrance hall, a permanent exhibition hall (Lucien Arkas Hall), a temporary exhibition hall, an exhibition corridor, and a café. At the heart of the building, nestled between the two primary exhibition halls, the event courtyard offers a surprising depth of space to visitors, who may otherwise perceive the building as a single-story structure. The building’s garden, designed for diverse functions such as exhibition, relaxation, and gathering, offers varied spatial experiences in the open air. The basement level, which houses a workshop area, library, exhibition hall, and offices, integrates seamlessly with the event courtyard, organizing dynamic spaces for diverse activities.

A uniform material palette plays a significant role in shaping the spatial atmosphere, emphasizing the perception of time. Natural travertine stone was used for the building’s walls, floors, open spaces, and outdoor furniture, creating a harmonious and cohesive environment.

“Arkas Art Alaçatı” is a public institution funded by a land allocation agreement between Arkas Holding and Çeşme Municipality, with the land leased to Arkas Holding for 30 years. This building offers a public space with the potential to alter the local dynamics and stands as a prominent example of Public-Private Sector Collaboration that benefits the public.

With its strong focus on art and culture, the building is set to transcend the typical, tourist-driven activities that have come to define Alaçatı. It offers innovative and original spaces, creating an alternative daily life experience. Through its simple yet sensitive architectural design, “Arkas Art Alaçatı” is poised to make a significant impact on the local community and change the cultural landscape of the area.
